PODPASSIV

Sustainable flat pack housing for multi market sectors.

Remarkably, only four months after the launch of Cub, with worldwide disasters becoming ever more frequent, Charlie decided to embark on designing a building system that was robust, sustainable, watertight, and secure which would work in regions where electricity and water supplies were unavailable in addition to providing an innovative affordable housing model for market rent. This involved utilising knowledge she had gained from designing Cub, looking at alternative construction methods that would provide a robust and long lasting solution to housing needs that could be flat packed for shipping.

In under a year the PODPASSIV concept prototype was ready to view at the BRE innovation Park in Watford. She also developed a solar lamp that can be fitted in any roof structure worldwide where direct access to sunlight is available. The solar lamp provides 6-8 hours of high quality LED light from single days solar charge. This also lends itself to multi market sectors and can be retrofitted into boats, caravans, motorhomes, sheds, temporary housing, car parks and external lighting.

The PODPASSIV building system  received finalist status in the 2012 sustainable innovation categories of Technology Strategy Board and The Sustainable Housing Awards.

PODPASSIV is a patent pending highly engineered sustainable building solution, supplied in kit form that offers both a semi permanent or permanent sustainable scalable building solution for garden rooms, leisure, glamour camping “glamping” sectors, POP UP hotels, affordable housing and post disaster zones where supplies of water and electricity are unavailable.

The building is manufactured in a composite GRP and recycled steel insulated wall panel system that carries the necessary certification for compliance, resistant to extreme temperature and weather conditions and has a life span well in excess of 60 years. The building block components have been designed in line with Health and Safety Regulations enabling it to be built safely by two people. The wall panels pack into the roof trays providing a compact unit for shipping, allowing 8-10 buildings to be shipped in a 40ft sea container. This greatly reduces the cost in shipping and CO2 emissions created by transport. The building requires minimal foundations and in most cases just level ground.

PODPASSIV can be utilised again and again, unlike other solutions, which takes a cradle to grave approach. Erection takes only a few hours and requires minimal tools, utilising available unskilled labour. The building can be easily sterilised and used for a huge variety of purposes in line with Defraʼs Code of Practice. The building system can be built to 4 stories high and bolts together laterally to provide spaces of any size.

Rainwater is collected via the roof and channelled into the upper back wall sections for collection via an external tap. Solar lamps in the roof provide 6-8- hours of high illumine LED lighting which is supplied with an interchangeable USB port for charging mobile phones and portable devices. Hybrid PV systems allow off-grid -living.

The building was designed to be applicable to multi market sectors and to meet governmentʼs key priorities including low cost sustainable homes and eco agendas.
